About Us

What is a Nurse Practitioner?   > Meet our Staff

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who has completed advanced education (a minimum of a master’s degree) and training in the diagnosis and management of common medical conditions, including chronic illnesses. Nurse practitioners provide a broad range of health services. They provide some of the same care provided by physicians and maintain close working relationships with doctors. An NP can serve as a patient’s primary health care provider.

Nurse practitioners can see patients of all ages. The core philosophy of the field is individualized care. Nurse practitioners focus on patients’ conditions as well as the effects of illness on the lives of the patients and their families. NPs make prevention, wellness, and patient education priorities and provide high-quality care. NPs conduct research and are often active in patient advocacy activities.

To be licensed as a nurse practitioner, the candidate must complete a state approved advance training program that usually specializes in a field such as family practice, internal medicine, or women’s health. After completing the education program, the candidate must be licensed by the state in which she or he plans to practice. The State Boards of Nursing regulates nurse practitioners and each state has its own licensing and certification criteria. NPs also have their own DEA number which entitles them to write prescriptions for medications.

Pat News, RNC, NP, MSN

I knew I wanted to be a nurse at the young age of 12. Since becoming a nurse, my nursing career has given me opportunities to work in many different areas of nursing including ICU, an out-patient multi-specialty facility, home health, management, education, student health and, finally, as a partner in my own private practice. I received my NP certificate as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner from Harbor-UCLA in 1983; I graduated from CSU Statewide Nursing Program in 1989 with a Baccalaureate in Nursing; I acquired a Master’s degree in the Science of Nursing from CSU, Long Beach, in 1994. I am board certified to function as a Women’s Health NP by the National Certification Corporation and hold a certification as an OB ultrasonographer through the ARDMS (Association of Registered Diagnostic and Medical Sonographers).
